Aboitiz & Company (ACO) was founded by Paulino Aboitiz in the late 1800s as an abaca trading and general merchandise business in Ormoc, Leyte and later ventured into inter-island shipping to transport its goods across the Visayas. It was formally incorporated in 1920 and serves as the private holding company of the Aboitiz family today.

I love my job because I get to learn about different industries, meet a variety of personalities and be exposed to different cultures. I work on a lot of exciting things and learn something new every day because my teammates are eager to share their knowledge and the great culture of collaboration. I am also grateful for the team leaders around me who serve as my mentors. Watching their management style has really influenced me on how to approach things and how to make a difference. Plus, I get to make friends with a lot of team members from business units across the Aboitiz Group.

Speaking of growth, development opportunities in Aboitiz are endless. I joined the company four years ago as a Learning & Development Officer. My leaders would constantly encourage me to expand my reach by exploring other facets of HR.
Indeed, stepping out of our comfort zone can be a rewarding experience. I’ve been recently entrusted to champion the Employer Branding Team of AboitizLand, where we take care of Attraction, Engagement & Internal Communication. It has been two and a half years since I started working in Pilmico as Corporate Social Responsibility Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Specialist. Yes, my job title is very specific, but I am fortunate to have a supportive team leader who has allowed me to wear different hats– capitalizing on my strengths and exploring my undiscovered potentials. Aside from doing M&E which entails measuring the impact and effectiveness of our projects, I am now also handling Sustainability– doing GRI and carbon footprint inventory and other envi-related initiatives. I was also given the chance to handle multimillion livelihood, infrastructure, and education-related projects in partnership with government and non-government organizations– intended to create shared value for the company and the community it serves.
Before joining Aboitiz, I didn’t know I’d be able to do all these. True to its promise of shaping a better future and personal growth, Aboitiz has opened me many opportunities for growth and has helped me build my career and become competitive in my field.

In 2018, our banking arm, UnionBank received two awards at the 2018 Stevie Awards for Great Employers held in New York–a Bronze Stevie Award for “One UnionBanker Hub, One Place Just for U” in the Achievement for HR Technology category and a Silver Stevie Award for our very own Michelle Rubio as Chief Human Resources Officer of the Year.
It is an honor to win a Stevie Award because it affirms that the UnionBankers are our greatest resource. We have done a lot to achieve the transformation in becoming a technology company with banking utilities. These awards will increase engagement among employees and will also bring confidence in our stakeholders in what we’re trying to do.
